Celebrating 150 Years of Hills Trust School Building

Join us this September as we open our doors to the public as part of Doors Open Days Festival 2026 and celebrate the 150th anniversary of our building, the former Hills Trust School.

Located at 65  Golspie Street in the heart of Govan, this remarkable Victorian building has been an important part of the community for generations. We are delighted to welcome visitors to explore its history, learn about its restoration, and discover how the building continues to serve the people of Govan today.

The Story of Hills Trust School

The former Hills Trust School is one of Govan’s most recognisable historic buildings. Designed by architects Baird & Thomson, it officially opened in 1876. The striking sandstone building features an impressive bell tower and distinctive Italianate architecture.

The school was established through the legacy of Abraham Hill, a Govan-born merchant and philanthropist. In 1757, Hill left funds to support education for children from poorer families within the parish of Govan. As land values increased over time, the trust was able to expand its educational provision and eventually funded the construction of a purpose-built school for the growing community.

For almost a century, thousands of local children passed through its doors. Hills Trust School served generations of Govan families before closing in 1974, when pupils transferred to a newer school building.

Following a period of vacancy, the Category B Listed building was carefully restored and brought back into use. The restoration preserved many of the original features, including the historic staircase, high ceilings and architectural detailing that made the school a local landmark.

Today, the building continues its community role as our offices, with spaces for use by community groups, ensuring that this important piece of Govan’s heritage remains at the heart of local life.
